Rio Grande

Rio Grande (also called the Futaleufú) · River

Shared Waters We Fish

River · Los Alerces area: fished by both Futaleufu and Trevelin · Trout averaging 16–20 inches

Originates at Lago Futalaufquen in Parque Nacional Los Alerces. Trout run large here.

The Mapuche named this river the Futaleufú, meaning "big river" (Rio Grande in Spanish), and it's renowned well beyond Argentina. It rises at Lago Futalaufquen in Los Alerces National Park, fed by glacier and high-altitude meltwater, and is a home water in the Trevelin area. Flat water, riffles, and deep pools give it real variety across its different sections, and it's known as a strong terrestrial and dry-fly river, with fish averaging 16 to 20 inches.
